Why was Caesar able to dissolve the republic and set Rome on a course to [totalitarian dictatorship]? Because, in large part, enough people believed that the republic was too [corrupt] to be worth saving.
Disturbing: agree. While reading the article, I was noticing parrallels to the riots of Rome and both the Tea Party and Occupy. In the end though... there are those that blame the fall on orgies, lead plumbing, corruption, and general sloth. Who knows in the end.
Maybe sub-part to lead, but might get the job done.
