Looking for a non-Military word or phrase to describe a concept...
I am writing some training documents for the Volunteer Fire Department. I was thinking about the way we used to train in my old martial arts dojo: practice slowly with known scenarios; we would then have a cluster f**k thrown at us to put it all together. We practice the cluster fucks all the time, but I want to encourage the slow repetitive practice of basics, but need to present the idea in a context that the other members will understand.
I can only think of two existing concepts:
- Karate "katas"
- Military "drill"
Using a Japanese word in rural North America is inappropriate and will loose my audience (Eastern Mysticism). Using "Millitary Drill" would be effective, but I do not want to encourage statist concepts (I also do not have military training so it would bring into question my credentials).
Can I get a brain storm on some words/phrases that would encapsulate the concept, but not be associated with the Military?
- a wild scenario
- a slam (like when a fast food restaurant gets slammed with a ton of orders/lines)
- cascade practice
- real world slam
- real world practice
I suppose both situations could be called practice with an adjective word indicating the level of practice. Such as: "today we'll be doing 4 lesson practices followed by a slam practice."
Plus it doesn't glorify the military machine to the 15 year old juniors...
