Even after I discovered my propensity for sneaking over to email or Twitter when I wasn’t quite sure what to write next, the discovery alone wasn’t enough to curb my less-than-ideal work habits. I thought it would be. And I tried, I really did. But somehow, up that browser window popped, seemingly of its own volition. What, me? Attempt to multitask while writing my book? Never.

Years ago, i was speaking to a family member/client that had dropped another deadline. Mid phone meeting, she put me on hold to answer another call. When she phoned me back, angry that I had hung up on her, I told her that she needed to focus on tasks, or I was dropping the project: "But I'm good at multitasking," she boasted.

When an employer asks for a person with the ability to multitask, I always imagine this family member doing lots, but achieving nothing. I have been known to ask potential employers what they mean by multitask, and if they really want that, or someone that can focus.

I am proud of my ability to focus on a task to the exclusion of all else for hours at a time and will attempt to sell it to employers as such.
