+Jeff Cave My sister switched from TD to a local credit union and I assumed it was better, but it may have been more a moral choice. I'm not sure if she pays a monthly fee for having a chequing account (TD charges $13/mth without min deposit of $2500). This is the type of thing I think of when I look around, and this isn't her CU, but typical mindset in Winnipeg: http://www.assiniboine.mb.ca/My-Finances/Banking/Access.aspx
I tend to stay away from co-operatives for ethical reasons. I find Co-operatives (in general) "talk the talk", but don't "walk the walk".
The 7 Principles of Co-operatives encourage "Cooperation among Cooperatives". Based on my experience working for co-operatives, I find this is used as an excuse to "not compete"; which in turn is used to drive up prices and corporate profits at the expense of the customer/shareholder.
"Co-operative" just ends up being synonymous with "Cartel".
Naturally this would have to be checked in each co-operative.
The wife and I were discussing this last night. We have concluded that Banks no longer get our business, we will deal with Bankers. It is not the Banks that instil a lack of confidence, but unknowledgeable and unprofessional staff.

Interview Bankers, not Banks.
