Where's your dad located?

If its reasonable cycling distance, I might be interested in hiring him.

I've got another mechanic interested, but he's a 1.5 hour ride away. Where ever I take this, I have to ride... I don't have another means to transport it.

Interestingly, I've found lots of small engine hobbyists looking for work. Every time I mention I have a job, they get squeamish and start stammering. I have found lots of mechanics complaining about not having work, since November I have been unable to find a mechanic willing to take a job.

It's the norm in Nova Scotia.

At best you will never get a complete job from a single tradesman. You need to hire at least two, or just do it yourself.

I've learned to become pretty self-sufficient since arriving here.

Best job was an electrician I hired, he said he was missing a part and would be back the next day. A week later I looked at the work and realized he had completed the job but for connecting the last wire. I inspected it twice, but there was nothing wrong. Easiest fix I've ever done. Never saw or hear from him again.

I've had that type of commitment from salesmen last year when I was wanting quotes on home renovations. They all want me to spend $50k or it's not worth their time. House needs windows, insulation(would mean siding redone or new) and eavestroughs.
