I've always thought this was the tricksiest part of voluntary society, because you can end up with people being born and having zero place on the planet to call their own. Just another type of tyranny, no?
yep. I have this long held maxim: Coming up with solutions is easy, defining the problem is the hard part.
Aside from feeling something was wrong after reading Mises, I did a historic tour of one of the earliest European settlements in North America (Port and Annapolis Royal). One thing struck me: colonists were paid labourers.
The colonists were people looking for a better life, and were offered excellent paid jobs, by a privately owned organisation (The Crown). Transport (to the new world), tools, food (for five years), clothing, skilled carpenters/smiths/doctors, and protection (from pirates, privateers and thieves); in exchange for a percentage of production off previously unclaimed land.
BAM! The Crown has (some) legitimate ownership claims to Canada, and I'm left with a paradox: either my beliefs are correct, or (some) taxation is legitimate rent.
I've been pondering the problem since, and it may become relevant in the near future: private companies are sending privately funded missions to Mars.
