So no independent breweries? What about Canadian whiskies? Did the gummint take them all over?

The Province of NS is a little more draconian than other provinces.

We have "independent" breweries in NS, but they are all sub-licensed from the government. This means that getting one of those sub-licences mean selling the quality of your product to a government official.

The law explicitly states the goal to be "protect the government's product image" (paraphrased). It means there isn't a lot of risk taking in terms of variety.
