Having grown up in a time when gender stereotypes were frowned upon, and gender roles were far more fluid, I find myself agreeing with the article.

I am finding the current trend toward hardening of gender roles to be worrisome.

The point is that transitioning is reconcilable with conservative theocracy because is preserves traditional gender roles and boundaries, whereas homosexuality threatens them. And many who transition do so in order to align their sex with their gender, as defined by conservative tradition. That is fundamentally reactionary.
